All in blues and reds
my milk jug sits jauntily
like a sweet sparrow
This sparrow beaked jug from the 1920’s was hand painted in Paris. It style is known as a “sparrow-beaked jug” based on its little pouring lip and attractive little bird shape.
In response to Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Challenge: Prompts for this week are “Bird and Red“.
What a beautiful pitcher…and the haiku is perfect!

Beautiful haiku. I looked up the word jaunty, being one of those words I pretty much knew what it meant, but wasn’t entirely I knew all of the nuances of the word. I got the lively and cheerful meanings right, but the definition I found also included self-confident. Makes sense when I think about how I image a jaunty person walking down the street. The jug in the photo definitely has a self-confidence about it. When I go back over the haiku, “all in blues and reds” now takes on the jug (or a person) dressed up in colors in confident display. “a sweet sparrow” sitting in a tree has a greater depth to it, singing it song with pride.

Thanks so much for the reflection! I am so glad that “jaunty” hit the mark and that you found some hidden depths in the poem. It is very kind of you to take the time to share your insights as it is always hard to judge whether or not a poem is appealing to others. Best wishes to you! 🙂

Love the decorative pitcher, such bright and uplifting colors. Your last line ‘like a sweet sparrow’ is so delicate and perfectly fitting. jk 🙂
