A Family Portrait

Tears in the kitchen sink.
Tears in the kitchen sink.

While the storm raged outside, the little family lived in their little world.

Granny sat contentedly in the squashy armchair, deftly crocheting brightly coloured woollen squares from remnants of wool, her gaily coloured knee rug tucked well about her.

“You alright my darling?” asked mummy touching granny’s silver curls fondly.

Granny smiled and nodded, carefully storing the caress with all the others in her heart.

Mother bent down and picked up baby who had wormed her fat, adorable way across the floor towards Granny’s wool basket.

“You hungry, lovely one?” mummy asked.

Baby’s smile transformed her into a cherub and she flung her arms about mummy’s neck.

“May we go to the seaside tomorrow?” Asked one of the twins, his face pressed to the window.

“I think it will be too wet.”

Mother for a moment thought that the raindrops running down the glass were her son’s tears, he looked so forlorn.

A door knock.

“Daddy!” cried the twins as mummy opened the door with a smile on her beautiful face.

“Telegram!”…

Writing 101Prompt Day 4

Thanks to Priceless Joy for the photo prompt for this week’s Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers  and day 4 of writing 101 with the photo prompt “Window”. It made me think of a little family tucked away behind a rain drenched window and this story was the result.

  1. I love the way you set up the scene TJ, it is so vivid and clear. Also, the ending leaves our minds to imagine what comes next. Love it!! Thank you so much for participating in the Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers challenge!

  2. Ah what a lovely scene…I could imagine my own Grandmaman knitting and my mom there too. Not rare to see 3 and sometimes 4 generations in one household…the love and warmth is so evident in this home and you end it with a bang. Makes me think of a movie during the 2nd World War or Vietnam war. Well done!!

        1. It happened so tragically for so many families. At that time too people just seemed to have to accept the news without any offers of support. It is unbelievable that the world, alas, continues to be filled with conflict.

    1. Thanks so much. I have always thought of telegrams as very worrying. This new generation has no idea about them at all now of course. Thanks so much for your encouragement. 🙂

  3. Such a lovely woven image of this family. Then I read “telegram,” and my heart plummeted. It could be nothing, but from movies and the stories I’ve heard, telegrams hold a negative connotation. I’m hoping for the best for this family, and families that are (or have) experienced this. Great job!
