Lazy Sunday

Perth Springtime. Western Australia changes briefly into a land of flowers and lush green. It will soon disappear as the scalding summer approaches. I did not use the viewfinder for this photo but just held the camera near ground level and snapped.

Although those on the other side of the world may well be just waking up, we have spent the day gardening. Perth’s weather has moved into spring mode and three hours of weeding restored our beds to respectability.

The flowers are bursting with the joy of spring and I am delighted to say that after years of disappointment our mandarin, orange and lemon trees look set to have bumper crops if the blossoms are any indication.

This is another one of the photos I took at King’s Park where the Western Australian wild flowers continue to bloom prolifically.

If you find all this rather sappy then keep in mind that it is also poisonous snake season as well as magpie swooping season so if you let your weeds grow too high in your garden you may well wind up with a deadly snake and its dear little babies clamping onto your fingers as you reach down to remove a stubborn dandelion and then, as you lift up your eyes to heaven to pray for assistance, have one of them pecked out by a territorial magpie intent on protecting its infants.

Ahhh Austrailia. Perfect one day, deadly the next.

  1. Fabulous post, TJ–lovely wildflowers, and I’m so envious of your citrus trees…but I’ll pass on the poisonous snakes! I didn’t realize magpies were so vicious…you’re a fount of information, thanks!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. When I was in first year Primary (elementry) school, out local country school made kids walk to school with icecream tubs on their heads in case of magpie attacks. That alone scarred us for life. 🙂

  2. I found a snake under my sink in Tours, France. I picked it up, put it in a bag and threw it away. Then I told the landlady who called the firemen who were too afraid to check the bag. They called a snake specialist who tried to convince me I had brought the snake with me in my suitcase!! Thankfully it wasn’t poisonous because I didn’t even think of that when I picked it up.

    1. Wow! This would make a great short story. I can just see all the villagers clustering about discussing who should be responsible for the snake, consulting the Mayor and then the President, only to have the snake leave of its own accord. Hope you have a great rest of the week! 🙂
