These pair of little Japanese wooden dolls I bought yesterday for just $2 each concealed a charming secret.

Welcome to the first TJ’s Household Haiku Challenge for 2016! The prompt for this week is “Container”. We have all sorts of containers in the house so what does your real or metaphorical container hold? Please do share links to your posts in the comments below and if you can include a snap of your container for other to enjoy, all the better.

On New Year’s Day in Perth there is an antique fair and I picked up these two Japanese dolls from the 1950’s for a mere $2 each. When I go home I was cleaning them up and suddenly one pulled apart and this was the result!

Similar to Russian Matryoshka nesting dolls these little dolls have movable heads and are hand painted in bright colours. My sister who was visiting at the time played with the smallest doll only to find it too contained a minute baby little bigger than a grain of rice with a sweet little face painted on it.

  6. beautiful and creative riff off of the notion of containers. moreover, a flawless flow from what is initially (for most) less than pleasant notion / season — autumn — to the more lively and embrace seasons of summer and spring. yet with the notion of ‘contain within’ as the bridge, turns the original not-so-pleasant into something to be embrace. As someone in my autumn years, I really do appreciate that. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for your thoughts. Age gives us the chance to embrace our summers and springtimes but the exterior gets a little worse for wear. Sigh. I look at my grey hairs and want to shout “but I am still 20 inside!” Then I drink cocoa and fall asleep on the sofa.

    1. Ah you crafty thing you! Lovely haiku and great story. I knitted a scarf once. My sister and I sat up all night with wool leftovers. I ended up with 2 metres of scarf of the most unwearable purple and green scratchiness. 🙂

    1. Oh I have never heard of this quote before. I am not keen on Camus after having to read The Stranger in high school and sadly not “getting” it. This is a lovely quote.

          1. We had our first snow and the parking lot (car park?) looks like an ice rink–so the week is beginning with a chilly case of “nerves”…I’ll try to venture out tomorrow (walking, as I’m a non-driver) 🙂

          2. To those without snow it always seems sooo romantic but having seen what it can do when you are driving or getting about I am sure the reality is another thing altogether. I hope your feet remain firmly planted in your first foray into the winter wonderland. 🙂
