This strange spider, little more than a centimetre across showed its spectacular abdomen as it clambered about on the sandstone rock-face.

Ronovan Writes Monday Haiku Prompts for the week this week are Sing and Day

This is a photograph I took of a peculiar spider that was on a rock wall at a quarry where we performed a Christmas Concert on the weekend.

As most people know, Perth is rife with critters that crawl, bite and sting but I have never seen this particular spider before. Perhaps I have discovered a rare new species!!!

  1. You must be the first in for the challenge! Now I am guessing what the prompts are 🙂 a very lyrical soothing haiku — that spider does look unique. I bet if it was magnified it would look quite scary.

    1. I had to get very close in to get a good shot of it and it could move pretty fast. I agree that it would not be the sort of thing an ant for example would find comforting to see emerging from the darkness. Thanks for liking the haiku!   2. What a jewel of a spider it looks like a lampwork glass bead.
    I like the first haiku best, not sure why, something about the way it sounds when I read it aloud. Love the imagery of both, it’s as if the spider makes a harp of its thread – beautiful.

  8. What a pleasant surprise, T.J. Love how you included the wind as another character in your beautiful haiku. It’s interesting how you demonstrated that altering the second line in such a subtle way could affect the musical timbre suggested. Such a unique photo.

    1. Thanks so much. I have actually found out that it is known (very luckily) as a “Christmas Spider” so it fits the time very well. It is amazing how beautiful nature can be. Blessings! TJ

      1. Yes, there are several variations of the Christmas Spider story–ages ago someone made me a silver spider ornament (beautiful!), and enclosed the printed tale. Sadly, I guess it got lost in the shuffle of life…as I don’t have it now. Huge Blessings to you!!

  10. My choice would be for the first, but to be honest I have a little phobia about spiders, and anything like photo of webs or poems about them tend to create an impulse to go elsewhere. Yet still your poems were, in spite of that, soothing.
