The Shuffle

There is always a Joker in the pack.

Shuffle

I thought I was living life
But then I found it just a game
Where I knew not the rules

Others played too long, too well
And kept their hands well-guarded
And in the endless dealings,
Through slight of hand or sheer dumb luck,
I only got the joker

And in this endless, cryptic game
He never had a part.
But I played on and placed him down
Hoping just for once to find,
That my lone card might come up trumps,
But never once succeeded

And when the final hand was played,
The chips cashed in, the spoils dispersed,
Just as the start, and at the end
Alone was I, the joker.
